A reflection on choice

Is one life really better than the other?

Maya, about consciousness

In our lives, some paths may be better than others, and some choices may deserve to be preferred. But no imagined future is worth pursuing so fiercely that we sacrifice our judgment, our integrity, or the peace of our present life.

There are countless lives we might have lived, but only one we ever will. We tend to overestimate the difference between the path we chose and the paths we did not, because we can imagine those alternatives but never actually experience them.

Perhaps the wisest thing we can do is not to trade the vast majority of today's time and tranquility pondering on different options, but rather to choose a path carefully with conviction, then own it, live it fully, and give our best to the life we are in currently. And as we discussed in Grooves, Not Blank Pages, there is perhaps a layer beyond our control in all the choices we make that makes us land on the life path we are on.
